Seattle, the culinary melting pot - Article Continues

For Stephanie McAfee, who works behind the counter at My Coffeehouse, the bagels remind her of Sundays back home. McAfee grew up on Long Island and moved out here to get a master's degree in soil science.

"My mom worked a lot, so Sunday mornings with bagels was the time when we got to be with her," she said.

The bagels with everything also carry Sarah Gelfand back to her Sunday mornings in New York, where she used to take the 1 train from her apartment in the West Village to the West 79th Street and Broadway station.

She'd pass the newspaper stands and the tables with used books on the sidewalk, making her way to the tiny H&H storefront with the long lines, the no-nonsense people behind the counter and the bagels dumped haphazardly in glass cases. Then, armed with a bagel and a voluminous Sunday New York Times, she'd either head past the 100-year-old brownstones and shadowed tree-lined streets to Central Park, or over to a friend's walk-up in the neighborhood.

"It's where I lived post-college," she said, "so those Sunday morning conversations were about who you want to be. A lot of soul-searching. Also a lot of excitement about living in New York, because it becomes part of your identity. You're having all these New York experiences, and you talk about these great moments that happened. These sort of passing moments in the subway, and how it's so crowded but all these different kinds of people are making it work."

Gelfand gets almost teary talking about it. She moved to Seattle with her husband three years ago to get a master's degree in statistics from the University of Washington. The couple's Sunday routine now involves a drive from Capitol Hill to Madison Valley, where they pick up their H&H Bagels and a $5 Sunday New York Times.
